PowderBedSimulator

Layer Method (left image) and Line Method (right image)

PowderBedSimulator performs thermal analysis of a part throughout the powder bed deposition process. There are two methods in PowderBedSimulator: the layer method and the line method. The layer method simulates the general build and temperature rise by modeling a block of layers at a time. The line method simulates the temperature rise of one layer as individual tracks are deposited.

The resulting temperature profile from PowderBedSimulator can be used in microstructure models to predict the integrity of the part. Using the AMP² software suite, the temperature profile can also act as an initial temperature input into ParaGen to calculate track geometry and solidification data.

PowderBedSimulator performs preprocessing, using Lagrangian calculations to convert its simple user inputs into the detailed inputs required for thermal analysis. PowderBedSimulator then uses AbaqusTM commercial FEA software as a solver to perform thermal analysis and generate the resulting temperature profile. This automatic process of PowderBedSimulator eliminates the manual input process.
